Short-Throw Projectors for Golf Simulators
Short-throw and ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors are the default display choice for golf simulators because most garages and basements lack long throw distance. The right unit fills a large impact screen from a safe mount without putting a lens in your swing path.
Brightness, throw ratio, input lag, and laser vs lamp life matter as much as resolution. Pair the projector with screen material and a PC that can drive the image — a weak GPU makes any lens look stuttery.

Throw distance before brand
Measure lens-to-screen distance and desired image width. Use manufacturer throw charts. Ceiling-forward short-throw and floor/shelf UST placements are common; both must clear walking paths and clubs.
Brightness for real rooms
Dedicated dark lounges can run milder output. Garages with light leaks need more lumens plus darker surrounds. Laser models hold brightness longer and reduce lamp swaps for daily drivers.
1080p vs 4K on impact screens
1080p looks excellent on many home screens when throw and focus are correct. 4K helps on very large surfaces and UI clarity — only if your PC can sustain smooth frame rates at that resolution.
Mounting and geometry
Physical alignment beats heavy digital warping. Have a second person help aim before finalizing mounts. Keystone tools are a backup, not a plan.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best short-throw projector for a golf simulator?
- BenQ and Epson models are frequently specified, alongside other laser short-throw and UST options. The best unit is the one that hits your screen size from your available depth at enough brightness for the room.
- Do I need an ultra-short-throw projector?
- UST helps in very shallow rooms or when you want the lens near the screen. Standard short-throw is enough for many bays with moderate depth. Chart it — do not guess.
- Laser or lamp for golf sims?
- Laser is popular for longevity and consistent brightness in daily-use bays. Quality lamp units can still work if you accept replacements and heat characteristics.
- Can I use a living-room projector I already own?
- Sometimes, if throw, brightness, and lag work on an impact screen. Many consumer long-throw living-room units fail the depth or mounting test in a garage bay.
